blurb about the event
"Nearly half a century ago, Chicago dominated the nation’s attention as never before or since--during the tumultuous Democratic convention, a week of startling scenes from Grant Park, the convention floor and the streets around the delegates’ hotels. That momentous week symbolized a year of change that gripped the nation and the world.
The legacy of 1968’s vanished realities remain with us today, both good and bad, often in painful juxtaposition. Gone are the Daley Machine and the Wallace legions demanding “segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever,” rampant police brutality and the draft, replaced by a multiracial president able to count on a restrained, professional CPD to host a NATO conference on winding down a war fought by an all-volunteer military. So too, gone forever are the wild-eyed idealism of teenagers and college students who think music and “be-ins” can change the world and even the simple expectation that a promising young lady full of dreams can walk safely through a city park after visiting our president’s inauguration And Chicago, like other cities, still bears the scar of whole neighborhoods burned and looted in those late 60’s riots, never rebuilt, where grinding poverty still breeds persistent hopelessness.
“Vanished Realities” is a powerful show featuring never-before-seen images, capturing vast changes in the faces of ordinary and extraordinary individuals who were part of the ferment, from police officers holding truncheons to idealistic protestors, from politicians to entertainers, all seen through the lens of a young Chicago photographer, himself caught up in the hopes and fears tearing apart the city and the world.
