"We have also long recognized as our founders recognized, that with rights come responsibilities. Along with our freedom to live our lives as we will, comes an obligation to allow others to do the same. We don't live in isolation, we live in a society. A government of and by and for the people. We are responsible for each other."
- President Barack Obama (1.16.13)
President Obama spoke regarding directives which he is hoping will be approved by Congress, although he expressed that pundits, lobbyists, and special interest groups are likely to throw up blockades against this legislature unless the constituents of legislators speak to their representatives.
The word politics is derived from the Latin root 'populo' which means people. Politics means of the people - not in the interest of power, glory, fame, or wealth. As a politician, one is meant to be a servant of the people, a honorable notion which the machine of government has long strayed from. The influence of the financial vortex which is currently propagating itself (as systems in power tend to do) is causing widespread effects detrimental not only to citizens of this nation, but the globe, because we are all inextricably connected.
Why did the system of government deviate from its original selfless and noble path?
This article from the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University is informative as to the current state of campaign finance:
I am interested in solutions, and Dr. Timothy Lukes from the article above suggests that the money has to be taken out of the hands of campaigners altogether, stating that "paid political advertising should be banned, and replaced with information and debates financed and presented by independent media and independent political groups."
As President Obama stated today, "The only way we can change is if the people want it...[in our hearts we need to]...ask ourselves what is important".
What are your thoughts on what we can do to change the system?
